Privacy
The official Grindr app is full of trackers and analytics. Free Grind has none: it talks to Grindr directly, doesn't run any server of its own, and nothing you do in the app is reported anywhere else.
On top of that, Settings → Privacy gives you control over what other people see:
- Incognito Mode: the grid doesn't load or refresh, read receipts are never sent, and profile visits don't register as views. You can use the app without showing up as online or leaving a trace.
- Send Read Receipts: turn off to read messages without the other person knowing until you reply. With Per-Chat Overrides, the eye button in the chat menu changes this for single chats.
- Record Profile Views: turn off to look at profiles without showing up in their viewers list.
- Blur Profile Pictures in Grid: for browsing discreetly in public.
- Sensitive Content Warning: a warning screen before opening an album that could contain sensitive content.
- App Disguise (Android, iOS): swaps the app's icon and name on your home screen for a decoy (Calculator, Notes or Weather).
Network requests
Besides Grindr, Free Grind only contacts GitHub to check for updates. Turn off Check Automatically in Settings to stop that, and check manually instead. Translation and GIFs contact their providers only when you use them.
Account safety
- Using any unofficial client technically violates Grindr's terms of service. The risk is low, but it exists.
- Never share sign-in codes from Sign in on another device. Anyone with the code can sign in to your account.
- Only download Free Grind from the official releases page.
